The Sarawak Football Association had subsequently resolved that all its previous teams be disbanded and be replaced by Sarawak United FC, wherein the rich legacy and long history of football teams under the Sarawak Football Association is bequeathed to and inherited by Sarawak United FC. The establishment of Sarawak United FC will allow us to focus on the future and create a new legacy for football fans in Sarawak.Ĭommencing from 2021, FAM in conformity with the regulations set forth by the Asian Football Confederation had made it a requirement for participation in Liga Malaysia under the auspices of the Malaysian Football League (Liga Super and Liga Premier) be limited to football clubs (FC) and not Football Associations. In the same era, players from the Sarawak team were mainstays in the Malaysian national team with Datuk Ong Kim Swee, Mazelan Wahid, Bobby Pian, Shamsurin Abd Rahman, Affendi Julaihi and Safee Sali gracing the international scene. 1999 saw Sarawak qualify for the Piala Malaysia Final, which saw a 2-1 reverse against Brunei Darussalam. In 1997, Sarawak were crowned Premier League (as the top division was then known) champions. 1992 saw Sarawak as the first Borneo team to lift the FA Cup. The late 80s to late 90s saw Sarawak slowly gaining a foothold in local football.
History has proven that Sarawak was once a team to be reckoned with in Malaysian football.
