However, if you are watching the same show on the Netflix app while connected to a Proton VPN server via OpenVPN, those same requests from the Netflix app will count towards the battery usage of the Proton VPN app.
If you watch Netflix on your iPhone without a VPN, the requests the Netflix app sends out to the Netflix server to load the next show are registered as battery usage for the Netflix app. When you connect to our VPN using OpenVPN, the iOS operating system registers the network requests and responses of the other apps that use the VPN connection as belonging to the Proton VPN app. The issue lies in how the operating system reports battery usage. Seems to be heavily throttled, or something else is going on that I dont understand. Unfortunately it was pretty much unusable for me.

Honestly from what I have read I just like Mullvad as a company and trust them more then PIA. Your Mullvad subscription comes with apps for the following: Windows MacOS Android iOS Linux The last time we looked at Mullvad, they hadn’t yet added dedicated mobile apps, so it’s good to see those additions. I have been using PIA for a few years but thought Id give Mullvad a go. Some users have noticed when they select OpenVPN in our iOS app, the amount of battery power our app uses dramatically increases. Tried Mullvad for a month, didnt work out. The Mullvad FAQ entry just says to try disabling wifi calling.

Using the Wireguard app was only ever supposed to be a temporary thing until the Mullvad app was updated and fixed the issue, but I do not see it as an open issue that is being worked on over a year after the problem started. IVPNs app also feels a lot more native in iOS thanks to being built on Apples Swift, while Mullvad just lazily uses. IVPNs app has more features and is just more polished overall (and its also been audited more recently). Heck, they took forever to add native iPad support. The Proton VPN iOS app offers its users the choice of the OpenVPN, IKEv2, and Wireguard VPN protocols. Mullvads iOS app always felt like a bit of an afterthought to me.
